Conceptual Artist Aaron Taylor Kuffner Discusses His Gamelatron Project and the Challenges of Overcoming Isolation and the Fear of Success

Podcast Episode 139                                             Release Date: May 11, 2018

On this podcast world renown conceptual artist Aaron Taylor Kuffner discusses the sonic and kinetic aspects of his Gamelatron Project and how the emanating vibrations relax and calm listeners while simultaneously offering viewers beautiful sculpture works they can admire. Aaron tells listeners about the challenges he has had to face in order to earn a living as an artist—recounting the numerous jobs he has held down from waiter to video editor to bartender to cable TV show producer—to put food on the table. Aaron says that in order to do art at the highest levels, you have to first make a commitment to be your own patron. Additionally, he says that instead of thinking of any job other than art you have to take in order to make a living as drudgery, it’s helpful to reframe the money you make from those jobs as a necessary financial foundation for your artist passion. Aaron says that artists all too often overlook their own self care and that by learning to take care of yourself, you can actually produce better art over the long term—or, at least be around to view your own work! Aaron tells listeners about the important role family and social peer support has played in his life, especially how his wife Maya supports and agrees with his view that his art helps to nourish the soul and captures a form of beauty in the world that is sublime and meant to be shared. Aaron currently has an exhibit installed at the Smithsonian Institute in the Renwick Gallery entitled “No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man.” You can learn more about Aaron and his work by visiting his website: http://gamelatron.com/about/ or YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oy4YJfVXV0U
